The Kingdom of Denmark has only one official language, Danish, the national language of the Danish people, but there are several minority languages spoken through the territory. These include German, Faroese, and Greenlandic.

A large majority of Danes also speak English as a second language; it is mandatory for Danish students to learn from the third grade. In the seventh grade a third language option is given, usually German or French. Danish is spoken by around six million people, principally in the country of Denmark. It is also spoken by 50,000 Germans of Danish ethnicity in the northern parts of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, where it holds minority language status.
