Malay (Bahasa Melayu or Bahasa Malaysia) is the official language of Malaysia. It is very closely related to and for the most part mutually intelligible with Indonesian (more correctly known as Bahasa Indonesia), an Austronesian language which has been used as a lingua franca in the Indonesian archipelago for centuries. The two languages differ in vocabulary and accent, and in some cases require translation and/or localization between them.
