Indonesian (better known as Bahasa Indonesia or just Bahasa) is the official language of Indonesia. It is very closely related to and, for the most part, mutually intelligible with Malay (Bahasa Melayu or Bahasa Malaysia), an Austronesian language which has been used as a lingua franca in the Indonesian archipelago for centuries. The two languages differ in vocabulary and accent, and in some cases require translation and/or localization between them is needed.
