The Kingdom of Denmark has only one official language, Danish, the national language of the Danish people. However, there are several minority languages spoken through the territory, including German, Faroese, and Greenlandic.
A large majority of Danes also speak English as a second language as it is mandatory for Danish students to learn English in elementary school. In total, Danish is spoken by around six million people, principally in the country of Denmark. It is also spoken by 50,000 Germans of Danish ethnicity in the northern parts of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, where it holds minority language status.
