Khmer (pronounced “K’my” by native speakers) is the language of the Khmer people and the official language of Cambodia. It is referred to as “Cambodian” as well. Khmer differs from neighboring languages such as Thai, Lao and Vietnamese in that it is not a tonal language. There are a number of markedly different dialects of Khmer, but Standard Cambodian Khmer is understood throughout the country.
