Lao, also referred to as Laotian, is a tonal language and the official language of Laos. It is also spoken in northeast Thailand, where it is usually referred to as the Isan language. Spoken Lao is mutually intelligible with Thai and Isan. There are about 90 different languages are spoken within the country of Laos, many of which are unrelated to Lao, but Lao is the lingua franca among the Laotian people.
